Time to celebrate Data Privacy Day! The benefits of data privacy for individuals and businesses

Every year on January 28th, people around the world celebrate Data Privacy Day. This annual event is meant to raise awareness about the importance of protecting personal information online and to promote best practices for doing so. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at how managing your data security posture is crucial for protecting personal and company data, and how you can celebrate Data Privacy Day by taking steps to improve your data security posture.

Data Privacy Day, also known as Data Protection Day, was first established in 2007 by the Council of Europe. It is meant to honor the Council's data protection convention, which was signed on January 28th, 1981. The purpose of Data Privacy Day is to educate individuals and organizations about their rights and responsibilities related to personal information, and to promote privacy and data protection best practices.

Data Privacy Day is also intended to help people understand the value of their personal information and to encourage them to take steps to protect it. With the proliferation of technology and the increasing amount of personal data being collected and shared online, it is more important than ever to be mindful of data privacy.

Data Privacy Day is an important annual event that reminds us of the need to protect personal information online. By managing your data security posture, you can help ensure the privacy and security of personal and company data. Data Privacy Day is a global effort that generates awareness about the importance of privacy, highlights easy ways to protect your personal information and reminds organizations that privacy is good for business. The annual event began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. Data Protection Day commemorates the January 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.

That gives your company an excellent opportunity to differentiate itself by putting privacy first. In fact, a whopping 97% of companies report one or more tangible benefits after investing in robust privacy policies, from more significant competitive advantages to lower data-breach losses to increased investor appeal.

But when it comes to data privacy, staying ahead of the trends is a year-round effort, and it helps to have a plan you can commit to. Here are seven goals to keep the privacy fire burning bright when Data Privacy Day is just a warm and fuzzy memory.

There are many ways you can improve your privacy, for example by exercising caution before sharing private data online or with others. You may also make minor decisions, such as paying in cash instead of using a credit card, encrypting your emails and backups, and reading the terms of services before using a product (ie. is your privacy going to be respected?) and reviewing how a website is tracking you.

Recognized annually on January 28, Data Privacy Day is a dedicated time for the privacy industry to come together and raise awareness of the vital and growing role that data privacy plays in society. This year, the National Cybersecurity Alliance is expanding the celebrations to Data Privacy Week, January 24-28, to allow more time for industry-wide educational and networking events, webinars, CPE opportunities, white papers, social media conversations, and more.

It's that time of year again! With Data Privacy Month upon us, we turn the conversation to privacy in times of crisis. Privacy must be balanced against the many rights, values, and desires of our society, such as public health, student success, and efficient workplace technologies. This balance is among the most challenging issues of our time. UC San Diego are committed to striking and maintaining that balance and protecting the privacy of our students, employees, alumni, donors, patients, and research participants. Privacy is essential to many core university activities, and the UC San Diego Guiding Principles for Personal Data are designed to protect individuals and their data while not hampering the business of the university.

Convention 108 was the first official international agreement that addressed data protection and privacy.

Data Privacy Day's educational initiative originally focused on raising awareness among businesses as well as users about the importance of protecting the privacy of their personal information online, particularly in the context of social networking. The educational focus has expanded over the years to include families, consumers and businesses. In addition to its educational initiative, Data Privacy Day promotes events and activities that stimulate the development of technology tools that promote individual control over personally identifiable information; encourage compliance with privacy laws and regulations; and create dialogues among stakeholders interested in advancing data protection and privacy. The international celebration offers many opportunities for collaboration among governments, industry, academia, nonprofits, privacy professionals and educators.

The Data Privacy Life Cycle is a simple process flow (represented here as a diagram) to show the vital points where privacy decisions need to be considered. This is often used by organizations, but consumers also can use this to help understand privacy policies and questions they may have about use and maintenance of their personal information. It is vital to pose the following questions at every decision point in the data privacy life cycle: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
