Best software oscilloscope mac: What features to look for in a modern oscilloscope

DSO takes full advantage of BitScope's powerful mixed mode waveform and logic data capture capability and in BitScope models that support it, DSO adds arbitrary waveform generation (AWG) networked access for remote measurement and data acquisition as well as offline captured waveform replay and multiscope control, all accessed from the one PC software application.

Stand-alone scopes are fine but running a scope on your PC has some significant advantages. For one thing, screen captures are a natural (they're all over this website for example). You can also run multiple scopes from the one PC or plug captured data into third party software applications and the built-in networking means you can use a lab scope from home or make a virtual visit to a client's test site from your office.

The CI-73 allows the SC-300 or SC-500 set to interface with a computer! With this module, you will learn about and use an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, as you build over 73 BONUS PROJECTS using your Windows-based PC (32 projects require the SC-500).

The CI-73 allows the SC-300 or SC-500 set to interface with a computer! With this module, you will learn about and use an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, as you build over 73 BONUS PROJECTS using your Windows-based PC (32 projects require the SC-500). Comes with all of the interface parts you need and the software. Great for introducing electronics through a computer. Acts as a scope and allows you to see the signals in the circuit.

The software in this product is not Mac-compatible, but you can find a similar Mac version at It will not match our manual exactly, but the differences are minor and it should be easy to understand. The software at this link is not related to Elenco Electronics Inc. in any way; we do not support it or accept any responsibility for it.

Most of actual audio edition programs supports the "oscilloscope mode", I mean, the feature that allows user to see the audio wave format(all of them are limited to 20Hz to 20KHz). Check the Audacity software, there is a specific version for OSX, Windows and Linux that allows you to see the entire audio wave format:

Blue Cat's Oscilloscope is a great VST which I have used for EQ but lacks in GUI! also is limited to its features. VST plugin by Melda Production such as the MAutopitch or MAutopan are great, to be more relevant, mEQ and mOSC you can check out! 1 download has like 40 Free Bundle plugins it's probably one of the best Free VST's you will find out there.

Free plugins are always nice and even better when they are useful in our daily music production life. Socalabs, a new developer recently published a new free stereo oscilloscope plugin for PC and Mac. It features a positive and negative edge trigger, as well as adjustable trigger level and nice Y offset per channel. If you search an oscilloscope for your DAW than download it.

WaveWindow AU is an Audio Units plug-in software oscilloscope. It's useful for anyone who works with sound on the Mac; it's educational and fun to play with. There are several synchronization methods and display modes to choose from.

The free version of the software gives you all the extra features of a professional scope: time and voltage control; trigger options; spectrum analysis; datalogging; automatic measurements of figures of merit; serial data decode; and strip chart display. An example of the scope screen with just a few of these features is shown in Figure 1.

The default settings of the Waveforms software are a good place to start every measurement. The scope should be set for Auto trigger mode. Adjust the time base to 1 msec/div and offset to 0. Adjust the vertical scale to 200 mV/div and 0 offset.

For example, the Sabrent ( -MMSA/usb-external-stereo-3d-sound-adapter-black/#description) low cost ($8) USB sound card has an internal 16-bit ADC that can sample up to 196 kS/sec, but has a limited input frequency range from about 100 Hz to 20 kHz. The Waveforms software tool can drive this USB sound card.

If you want a stand-alone box scope, check eBay first. If you want to purchase a new box scope, the starting prices are typically about $300 without an integrated function generator or any analysis software. For a scope with significantly higher performance than 30 MHz bandwidth and 100 mS/sec, the prices start at about $500.

The combination of new features, portability, and processing power available on PCs means that high-end USB PC-based scopes are increasingly rivaling their benchtop brothers and doing so at a real cost advantage. The PC interface simplifies the processing and editing of files, and users can easily design their own programs to control their oscilloscope.

Unlike many USB oscilloscopes that use an easy-to-implement but not-so-intuitive-to-use window design, the two-channel Perytech DSO-U2200 presents more like a traditional oscilloscope, eliminating a lot of user inconvenience and confusion. While there are several PC-based scopes on the market, for the $110 price tag, this one is quite good. Versatile and accurate, the software includes many automatic measuring functions including maximum value, minimum value, frequency, and period. A stacking function allows up to four USB oscilloscopes to be stacked as an eight-channel oscilloscope. The logic analyzer mode decodes common protocols such as: I2 C, UART, I2 S, PS/2, CAN Bus, 1-Wire, S/PDIF, and Miller. Bandwidth is 60 MHz and the sampling rate is 240 MS/s using one channel. While some low-priced oscilloscopes do not include a hardware trigger because of the cost, it is a feature of the Perytech DSO-U2200, impressive at this price.

The two-channel Hantek IDS1070A oscilloscope can be used with iOS, Android 4.0, and Windows XP or higher on tablets, PCs, and the iPhone. Data exchange between the tablet and oscilloscope is via WLAN. The USB port is used for internal battery charging as well as connecting to a PC instead of using wireless connectivity. It can also be connected to an iPad and an iPhone simultaneously: the iPad for operation and the iPhone for observation.Features of the small, lightweight oscilloscope include waveform averaging, persistence, intensity, invert, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and X-Y plots. This is a fully featured oscilloscope usable for production test, research, and design applications. The 70-MHz bandwidth and real-time sampling rate of 250 MS/s translates into high-end performance for its $126 price tag.

The Digilent Analog Discovery 2 is a multi-function USB oscilloscope that was developed with Analog Devices and supported by the Xilinx University Program. Small but powerful, it targets students, hobbyists, and enthusiasts, enabling them to measure, visualize, simulate, and analyze a variety of mixed-signal circuits. Complete with a 16-channel logic analyzer and protocol analyzer, the Analog Discovery 2 is Mac-, Windows-, and Linux-compatible and is sold for less than $280.

Its WaveForms Software Development Kit comes with C++ and Python libraries and examples as well as forum support from the software developers. Analog Discovery 2 is also supported by third-party software such as MATLAB and LabVIEW.

A PicoSDK software development kit supports continuous streaming to the host computer at rates up to 125 MS/s, allows you to write your own software, and includes drivers for Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac (macOS), and Linux (including Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone). It also provides example code that shows how to interface to third-party software such as Microsoft Excel, National Instruments LabVIEW, and MathWorks MATLAB.

The sigrok project aims at creating a portable, cross-platform, Free/Libre/Open-Source signal analysis software suite that supports various device types (e.g. logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and many more).

The oscilloscope contains in addition a signal generator for 2 channels for sine, square, triangular, sawtooth wave forms and different noise spectra in the frequency range from 0 to 20kHz. The signal can be defined by a mathematical formula as well. The signals are available at the speaker output of the sound card. These can be fed back to the oscillocope in order to generate Lissajous figures in the x-y mode.

The signals for the oscilloscope can be internal to the computer (MP3 player, function generator etc.) or from external sources (line-in, microphone). For external sources care has to be taken, not to exceed the voltage range of the inputs. The range is usually only 0.7V !! If higher voltage need to be analyzed, a voltage divider has to be used. Additional protection diodes are recommended in order to avoid any damage to the sound card and to the computer.
